Our Mission
At Prince George Hospice Society, our specialized and compassionate staff and volunteers provide palliative and grief support programs and services that meet the individual needs of our guests, families, and community.
The Prince George Hospice Society was founded in 1987 by a group of people who recognized the need for hospice palliative care. A volunteer training program was instituted to train volunteers to provide support to the terminally ill in the Prince George area. The volunteers were matched with the referred patient and his/her family. In September 1993 the Society received a large donation of $255,000 from the Downtown Rotary Club of Prince George. This allowed the Society to purchase a house at 3089 Clapperton St. After receiving $289,000 as a government grant through the Closer to Home fund, the Rotary Hospice House opened for admissions in May 1995.
In 1999 we were able to acquire the property next door through the generous help of the Integris Credit Union. We received money from the BC 2000 program and the Vancouver Foundation so that the house was renovated to be a Bereavement Centre. We moved into the Bereavement Centre in November 2002. With generous donations from the Forest Expo Charity Auctions we have been able to expand programs and have renamed the Bereavement Centre to the Forest Expo House – the Caring Place.
In 2009 the Rotary Hospice House was expanded to 10 beds. The house is now 10.000 square feet in size. Each 306 square foot bedroom has a private two piece bathroom, a double bed size futon, recliner chair, wall mounted flat screen TV, separate heating and air conditioner unit large window, an electric bed and a ceiling mounted lift.
The heart of the home is the kitchen of course, with an open dining concept and a fireplace in one corner near a television. The previous bedrooms were renovated to provide a children’s playroom, a meeting room, a quiet room a den and a bedroom for overnight visitors.
Since the beginning, the Prince George Hospice Society has built a strong and respected reputation well beyond the local and regional level.
